This type of support can take the form of accompanying clients to appointments, administering medication, and recording detailed daily logs and behavioural data for the use of members of the client’s support team. Clients can be assisted with personal care such a toileting, hygiene, meals and assistive devices such as walkers and wheelchairs. Effective communication is paramount when providing support, therefore alternative communication strategies such as picture exchange systems and basic sign language are also used when necessary.
Clients are encouraged to express themselves using visual arts such as painting on canvas, sculpting with clay, collage and scrapbooking. Day trips can be arranged to various musical and dance events such as ballet, choir, outdoor concerts, classical music performances, drumming workshops and dance parties. Some venues offer accessible swim, gym memberships, and the chance to play on sport teams.
Individuals never stop learning regardless of age. Skills such as meal preparation and completing household chores can be practiced if that is a part of the client’s behaviour plan. If involved in volunteering or work, the client can be accompanied and coached in the performance of the job. TTC training, computer skills, reading skills, and math skills can be incorporated into daily activities.
